Bio // Resume
I’m a Hoosier who lives in LA and New York City. I was born and raised in Bloomington Indiana, and moved to NYC with my wife Lisa and our two cats. I lived and played bass there for 13 years, learning how to become a working bassist. My first established gig in NYC was with Ari Hest, with whom I’m still enjoying working with many years later. Ari and I have been touring and recording steadily for years. I’ve played bass on pretty much every record he’s made under his name. Recently I’ve broadened my relationship to producer with Ari, so keep an eye out for that soon. I’ve enjoyed a strong relationship with other brilliant NYC singers including Michael Brunnock and Colin Smith, and also producers Kieran Kelly and Ken Lewis.
My extensive work with Kieran lead to an introduction with the Australian Julia Stone, which lead to a long working relationship with her and her brother in Angus & Julia Stone. I recorded on their Down The Way album, a record which catapulted them to a new level. That record’s success was driven by the song Big Jet Plane, and as a result, went multi platinum in Australia and also much of Europe. Working with Angus and Julia allowed me to put many a stamp in my passport, and also led to extra touring and recording for their subsequent solo excursions, including Angus Stone’s Broken Brights record and tour, as well as Julia’s The Memory Machine. After regrouping, we all participated in recording their self titled album with Rick Rubin. The record also turned platinum in various countries, including Australia. The subsequent tour continued to wear out my passport to the point of needing a replacement. At the commencement of that tour, Angus and band (including drummer Matt Johnson and guitarist Rohin Brown) went back into the studio to colaborate and complete another iteration of Angus Stone’s musical vision, this time in the form of Dope Lemon.
While in Brooklyn, I was introduced to Declan ORourke, a singer/songwriter based in Kinvara, Ireland. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience to record on Declan’s albums including Mag Pai Zai, Gold Bars in the Sun, and his latest Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine. This latest record and tour featured the most incredible Mike McGoldrick (Mark Knopfler), John Sheehan (The Dubliners), Steve Wickham (The Waterboys).
I was introduced to and forged a friendship with Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger—before he released the world-dominating song Let Her Go. Since then, he's asked me to join in him in the recording of his Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea, and the subsequent tours. The record debuted at number one on the British, Australian and New Zealand album charts. Since then, we’ve recorded The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and The Sunday Night Sessions. In 2018, the band convened yet again to record his latest album Runaway, which has the current single Hell or Highwater.
I recently started composing and producing some instrumental tracks under the band name Schmetterling. (That’s the German word for butterfly.). I’ve enlisted the talents of fo musical pals Steve Elliot (guitars), Brian Griffin (Drums) and Blair Sinta (drums). The record was released in March of 2019 on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Deezer, iTunes, Amazon etc.
